On January 1, 2017, a new version of the International Classification of Goods and Services for the Purposes of the Registration of Marks (hereinafter referred to as the Nice Classification) shall enter into force. This version shall not be the next renewed version of the tenth edition (let me recall that the current, the tenth edition, was published in 2011), it will be a new, the eleventh edition.
This new eleventh edition shall be available online at the Web-site of the World Intellectual Property Organization by the following reference: www.wipo.int/classifications/nice/en/ .
Needless to say that this eleventh edition of the Nice Classification shall include certain amendments in comparison with the previous one, the tenth edition. It is worth remembering about it if you are planning to file new international applications, whose primary applications include the lists of goods and services edited in accordance with prior editions of the Nice Classification.
It is also necessary to take into consideration that WIPO shall apply the eleventh edition of the Nice Classification to all applications for international registration received by the national Offices on January 1, 2017, or later. As for applications filed up to and including December 31, 2016, as well as notices on renewal of international registrations and notices on subsequent designation, WIPO shall not reclassify the list of goods and services of such international registrations into eleventh edition of the Nice Classification in accordance with the established practice.
In all international registrations, for which the list of goods and services was classified in accordance with the eleventh edition of the Nice Classification, WIPO will indicate an abbreviation «NCL (10-2017)» together with the list of goods and services in all outgoing notifications, registration certificates as well as publications.
